AT&T is paying the price for two high-profile data breaches that exposed the personal information of millions of current and former customers. The telecommunications giant has agreed to a $177 million class action settlement from two separate cybersecurity incidents that occurred just months apart in 2024.
Whether you are an individual AT&T customer (or former customer) or represent a company that used AT&T services on behalf of its employees, you could be entitled to a substantial recovery.
What Happened?
AT&T’s difficult 2024 came to a head with a settlement late last month tied to two separate data breaches that rocked the telecommunications giant.
The first breach (referred to in settlement documents as “AT&T 1 Data Incident”) came to light on March 30, 2024, when AT&T announced it was investigating the unauthorized release of customer data sets which surfaced on the dark web. At that time, the company estimated nearly 73 million people were affected - nearly 8 million current customers and more than 65 million former account holders.
Then, months later, on July 12, 2024, AT&T found itself back in the spotlight, disclosing a second breach, referred to in the settlement as “AT&T 2 Data Incident.” This time, the compromise involved data illegally downloaded from an AT&T workspace hosted on a third-party cloud platform operated by Snowflake, Inc, and affected “nearly all” of its cellular customers from May 1, 2022, to October 31, 2022. The back-to-back incidents intensified scrutiny and heightened public concern over the company’s data security practices and use of external vendors.
The resulting settlement offers relief to customers affected by AT&T 1 or AT&T 2—with a third category for individuals impacted by both breaches, referred to as “the Overlap Class.”
Settlement Overview
The settlement is split across two funds, with eligibility on which breach (or both) impacted you.
AT&T 1 Settlement – $149 Million
The larger portion of the settlement applies to those affected by the March breach. Eligible class members may choose between:
AT&T 2 Settlement - $28 Million
The smaller AT&T 2 settlement addresses the July data incident. It mirrors the AT&T 1 structure but with scaled-down payments:
Overlap Class Members
If you were affected by both data incidents, you may qualify for compensation from each fund but must file separate claims tied to each breach.
Key Deadlines (tentative)
Note: Dates may shift pending court approval and the official launch of the settlement website. However, CCC is preparing for this litigation with the November 19 deadline in mind.
